It was an evening of high fashion and black ties for Mission Elementary School’s Rahn Decker and King Middle School’s Ameret Reed.  OUSD’s outstanding Teachers of the Year for 2013 graciously represented the Oceanside Unified at the 40th annual “A Salute to Teachers” gala at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego Saturday night.

Mrs. Decker, who teachers first grade at Mission, has been a classroom leader for more than three decades.  This is her second Teacher of the Year award.  Mrs. Reed, who previously taught Social Studies and English, now serves as an assistant principal for the King Lions. Rahn, Ameret, Larry.JPG

The yearly county Teacher of the Year awards program is sponsored by the County Office of Education and Cox Communications.  Congratulations to Rahn and Ameret for representing the district with style and class!

Taking its audience back in time 60 years, students and staff of Mission Elementary School celebrated the official grand re-opening of its renovated campus Wednesday.  The school officially opened its doors on September 11, 1963. 1000959_553793404669881_519059544_n.jpg

Student performances highlighted the celebration, including a dance routine to “Vaya con Dios,” the No. 1 hit performed by Les Paul and Mary Ford.  The song remained at the top of the Billboard charts for nine weeks in the summer of 1953.

A retrospective flashback highlighting the changes our nation has endured the past five decades was also presented.  Former Mission Principals Randi Gibson, Todd McAteer, Joe Farley and Gordon Hoard were also honored for their previous service leading the school.

Mission Elementary is one of seven OUSD schools to undergo a complete renovation since the passage of bond measure Proposition H in June 2008.

Promoting Achievement and Student Success (PASS Program)

PASS AmeriCorps logo.pngThe PASS AmeriCorps Mentor meets with referred students individually and in small groups to build a relationship to connect students to academic improvement in core subjects, attendance and behavior and to develop an individual goal plan. Students work to track their improvement, develop as positive leaders in their school and community through comprehensive character and skill development as outlined in our program.

The PASS AmeriCorps program also provides school and community gang and crime prevention education for students, school staff and parents. Parents are notified and must complete a PASS AmeriCorps Enrollment form for their child to participate in the program. The PASS AmeriCorps Mentors have some contact with parents to encourage involvement in their child’s education. For more information you may contact us at:
